Richard Bywaters

Richard Porter “Dick” Bywaters, 67, died on March 31, 2007 at his Dallas home.  He was born Sept. 2, 1939 in Dallas to Jerry and Mary McLarry Bywaters.  He graduated from Highland Park High School in 1957 and Southern Methodist University with a B.S. in mechanical engineering in 1962. He continued his studies at SMU and received an M.S. in nuclear engineering in 1965 and a Ph.D. in thermal and mechanical engineering in 1969.  He began his career as a professional engineer at Texas Instruments and received a commendation from NASA for his work on the Mariner Mars IX, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mariner_9.  He was an associate professor of engineering at the University of Texas at Austin and served as the Director of Industrial Energy Conservation at the UT Center for Energy Studies.  In 1979, he returned to Dallas with his family and founded Bywaters and Associates, Consulting Engineers.  He was an avid tennis player, an excellent dancer, a kind neighbor, and a loyal friend.

Dr. Bywaters is survived by three children, Pat Bywaters and his wife Catherine of Dallas; Leigh Swanson and her husband David of Orlando, Fl.; Katie Cummings and her husband Phil of Houston.  He cherished his six grandchildren: Katie and Will Bywaters, John David, Alex and Kaylee Swanson, and Leigh Cummings.  He is also survived by his sister and brother in law, Jerry and Calloway Cochran; niece Mary Cochran, and nephew Robert Cochran.  He was preceded in death by his parents.  His children remain grateful to his longtime companion, Charlotte Clark, for all her help and care during his prolonged battle with appendiceal and peritoneal cancer, http://www.pmpawareness.org/.

 A service bearing witness to the resurrection will be held at First Presbyterian Church, Dallas at 4:00 pm on Tuesday, April 3, http://www.presbyterians.org/.  The Rev. Dr. Cynthia W.
